I’m really sick of constantly reblogging thedailywhat, but this sent a fucking chill down my back. Look at that guy. The tanks are a good 100 yards away and he is just standing there, unflinching.

Photo of the Day: Never before published photo of Tiananmen Square’s “Tank Man” showing the unknown rebel staring down approaching tanks.

Journalist Terril Jones, who was in Beijing during the 1989 protests, sent the photo to the New York Times along with a detailed account of how he came to capture a shot of the iconic hero.

“I’ve always regretted not staying in place longer 20 years ago, despite the gunshots, and taken more photos,” Jones says in his e-mail to the Times, “so that I might have realized what was unfolding before my eyes.”

“But while I missed the timeliest opportunity to share this photo in 1989, today is an appropriate time to pull it out finally from its decades-old wraps.”
